Science has clearly shown that there's an underlying genetic susceptibility to many of the most common chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity and mental illness. And yet very few conditions are caused by a single gene or genetic mutation.

"In most cases, there's not just one gene that controls a particular trait; it's a combination of lots of genes that each have a small effect, and we don't have any good way to predict how that complex mixture of genetics is going to play out, especially when you add in environmental factors," says Mark Boguski, an associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School. "There's a saying: 'There's your DNA, and then there's what you do about it.' It's not destiny; it's just a matter of probability."

So, who do the experts like in this year’s big dance? According to SBGglobal.com 2009 World Series Odds & Predictions specialists, the New York Yankees [-200 ML] have been selected as the sports betting odds favorites to win their 27th World Series championship by dethroning the defending champs, Philadelphia Phillies [+170 ML]. 

But if these year’s MLB Playoffs have taught us anything, is that nothing is certain in postseason baseball. Take for example, the 2009 National League Division Series between the favorite St. Louis Cardinals and the underdog Los Angeles Dodgers. Not only were the Cards the projected NLDS series winners, but more so, some even had them sweeping the Dodgers. There was a sweep alright, but in the wrong direction.

I picked half of the first round series correctly...I feel kind of amazed to have that many, really. Both the Red Sox and Cardinals went for Maximum Fail, as those were my second and third most confident choices.
