Do stocks even matter anymore?

Well, did you enjoy the stock market in August? The worst U.S. stock market returns since that fun year of 2001 likely had you, like most investors, despondent about the future of equities. Large cash balances at the corporate level, cheap valuations, and lots of takeovers; many things look good but nothing seems to help the equity market. Investors are scared of a repeat of a 2008-like event, where it really didn’t matter what you owned — it all went down.

The market action these days brings me to an analogy: A relative of mine recently dropped out of university. “Degrees don’t seem to matter much anymore,” he said. “In fact, a lot of my friends have degrees but can only get a job at Starbucks. So why bother?”

Though thousands of soldiers are diagnosed with PTSD, many more suffer without treatment. Among those who do seek treatment, doctors are finding another, distinctly different problem called traumatic brain injury, or TBI. The two conditions have similar symptoms, but the causes are quite different. While PTSD is a psychological disorder that can be treated with medication and therapy, TBI is physical injury to the brain that requires cognitive treatment to help rebuild function. "Fundamentally, PTSD is a disorder where you remember too much, whereas TBI is a disorder where you don’t remember enough," says Dr. Gregory O’Shanick, National Medical Director for the Brain Injury Association of America.

BCS National Championship Game

Jan. 10
Glendale, Ariz.
BCS #1 vs. BCS #2
Comment: The top two teams in the CBSSports.com 120 rankings will meet in the BCS National Championship. Alabama will be seeking its second consecutive national title, while Ohio State will be looking for its first since 2002.

The champions of selected conferences are contractually committed to certain bowls, unless they are No. 1 or No. 2. (ACC: Orange; Big Ten: Rose; Big 12: Fiesta; Pac-10: Rose; SEC: Sugar). If a Bowl loses a host team to the title game, then the bowl gets first choice at a replacement team. The rest of the selection order for 2011 is as follows: Sugar, Orange, Fiesta.

Chris Schultz' NFL Season Preview:EACH NFL CLUB FALLS INTO ONE OF THREE CATEGORIES -TSN

Whenever I try to assess or evaluate a team's playoff possibility before they have even played their first game, I ask if they are rebuilding, reloading, or refining. Those are three distinct and different categories of assessment, with specific challenges for possible success.

First, if you are rebuilding, you are doing just that – whether it's with a new coach or the reality of lack of talent, the truth is you have no playoff shot this year and in all likelihood over the next three years. Although the future looks bright you just don't know how the players will react and respond to a 16-game NFL schedule.
